Why Feet May Ache More After Dark

Pain that sets in during the evening or overnight can have many triggers. Irritated nerves may create tingling or burning once the feet are still. Circulation changes in a reclined position can lead to throbbing or heaviness. Inflammation from arthritis may stiffen joints during hours of rest, while strain in the plantar fascia can cause lingering soreness from the day’s activity. Muscle cramps, often linked to dehydration or low mineral levels, may jolt you awake. Even blankets pressing on the toes can aggravate tender spots. Because these sensations can stem from multiple causes, finding lasting relief depends on identifying the source. Solutions might include specific exercises, wearing better footwear, or podiatric treatment. If foot pain regularly interferes with rest, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a full evaluation and targeted care.

  • Bone Spurs
  • Corns
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

The Importance of Road Running Shoes for Foot Health

Road running shoes are specifically designed footwear created to support the feet during running on hard, flat surfaces. Over time, they have evolved to provide advanced technology that enhances comfort and performance. Key features include cushioning for shock absorption, support for proper alignment, and breathability for airflow, in addition to durability for long-distance use, a lightweight design for efficiency, and flexibility to allow natural movement. These qualities make them preferred by runners who seek comfort and injury prevention. A podiatrist can help by recommending the right shoe based on your foot type and running style to avoid strain or injury. If you have foot pain from wearing the wrong shoes, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can guide you toward choosing the right shoes for your running style, while offering effective relief and treatment tips.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from The Podiatry Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

Symptoms and Treatment of Bunions

A bunion is a foot deformity where the big toe gradually shifts toward the second toe, typically creating a bony prominence at the base of the big toe. This change in alignment can lead to irritation of the joint, causing pain, redness, and swelling, especially along the inner side of the foot. The joint may become stiff, and fluid-filled sacs called bursae can develop, sometimes leading to inflammation known as bursitis. The discomfort from a bunion may worsen when wearing shoes that lack adequate support or have a narrow toe box. A podiatrist can evaluate the degree of deformity and determine if structural issues in the foot, such as excess pronation or joint instability, are contributing factors. When discomfort interferes with walking or conservative options fail, surgery may be considered to realign the toe and reduce pain. If you are experiencing pain from a bunion, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate treatment options.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Podiatrists often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your provider.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Assessing Foot and Ankle Pain in Children

Foot and ankle discomfort in children can arise from a variety of causes, including growth-related changes, overuse injuries, or structural concerns. A podiatrist evaluates the child’s medical history, activity level, and footwear to identify potential contributing factors. The examination may include checking joint flexibility, muscle strength, and walking patterns to detect abnormalities. Imaging tests are sometimes used to confirm the diagnosis or rule out more serious conditions. Early identification of the underlying issue is important to prevent the problem from interfering with daily activities or sports participation. Treatment may involve activity modification, stretching, wearing supportive footwear, or custom orthotics to address specific needs. Timely intervention can help relieve discomfort, promote healthy development, and reduce the risk of chronic problems. If your child experiences persistent foot or ankle pain, it is suggested you arrange for an evaluation with a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
