Morton’s neuroma is one of the most painful foot conditions that can develop. The pain is felt between the third and fourth toes and results due to an inflamed nerve. If the arch is weak the nerve can become compressed, causing the tissues to thicken. This can happen from wearing shoes that do not have enough room for the toes to move freely in, therefore the nerve becomes irritated. A numbness or tingling sensation can often be felt with this condition and walking may become difficult. Morton’s neuroma may also gradually develop from extreme overpronation which is the foot continuously rolling inward while walking. This may cause the bones in the front of the foot to compress the nerve. Effective treatment generally begins with frequently resting the foot and some patients choose to insert a cushioned pad into the shoe. If you have developed Morton’s neuroma, please confer with a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition while offering you pain relief options.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.

Children’s Ankle Braces

As a young child grows, matures, and engages in physical activities such as school sports, it is common for the child to possibly experience some kind of foot condition. Ankle complications can be common among children, particularly because overuse injuries and growth spurts can put pressure on the ankle. There are many different ways to treat ankle injuries such as sprains among children, depending on the nature and severity of the injury. One way in which a medical professional might recommend treating a child’s ankle injury is with the use of an ankle brace. For example, ankle sprains and stress fractures may be significantly supported by the use of an ankle brace of some kind. Ankle braces come in different shapes and sizes. Typically, they may look like a kind of boot or wrap. If your child is struggling with an ankle injury, talk to your podiatrist about ankle braces or other devices that may help the foot heal. Please schedule an appointment today for correct treatment options.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Wearing a Brace After an Ankle Sprain

Rushing the healing process after spraining an ankle is unwise, according to experts. This is because if the ankle does not fully heal, it is much more likely to be sprained again. For this reason, using an ankle brace during the recovery period can be a good idea. The goal of wearing an ankle brace is to speed up the healing process while preventing further pain. There are three types to consider, based on the severity of the sprain. The first type, used in more severe cases, immobilizes the ankle while providing compression to keep swelling down. If you are healing from a more moderate sprain, you may wish to use a brace that eases up on compression but keeps the ankle from moving laterally. For a mild sprain, a lighter-weight brace is suggested, which still offers some support while it helps to stabilize the joint. For more information on the proper brace to use after an ankle sprain, please consult a podiatrist.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact one of our podiatrists from The Podiatry Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Falling and the Workplace

Many people fall in their place of employment, which often decreases work productivity. Research has shown that falling is the most common cause of injuries related to work, and it is important to be aware of correct fall prevention techniques. It is the employer's responsibility to have employees understand the dangers of falling and implement changes to the workplace for protection. Scenarios that fall into this category can include covering or guarding floor holes and installing railings around dangerous machines. Additionally, safety nets, stair rails, and handrails can be included in other forms of fall prevention methods. Many employers understand the importance of keeping the work area clean and dry, and it is beneficial to train employees about specific job hazards. If you would like more information about how the feet can become injured during a fall, please speak with a podiatrist who can teach you about effective fall prevention strategies.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from The Podiatry Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
